timeline
lightning lived in a small village community, with a dwindling population. every one else her age had left to go to one of the towns or cities, and older adults were leaving too. lightning lived with her father, fiorello, and disabled mother, ailine. lightning had wanted to leave and explore space when she was older and a more experienced mechwarrior.
lightning had recently started to learn to pilot a mech when the rebellion started. fiorello was in the royal military and defected to the rebels after larger scale fightning broke out. he was killed in combat by his former unit.
when the clans invaded in 3050, wider panic broke out and people began to flee to the starport to leave the last ships before the clans got to that part of the planet and locked it down. lightning’s village managed to pool together only enough money for one of them to get one of the last tickets, and lightning was nominated to leave since she was the youngest among them, and had long dreamed of exploring space. however, lightning gave the money to ailine so she could leave, and with enough spare money to hopefully get long-needed medical treatment that the village and hellenport as a whole had been unable to provide her.
after ailine had left, lightning took her raven and joined koh's irregulars, the resistance against the clan invasion. it wasn’t really a “there was nothing left for her in the village now” choice, because there was lots left for her there. the community and place she had grown up with for her entire life, those who had helped raise and teach her, although it was true everyone her age had left, many of them killed in the cities during royalist/rebel conflicts. she left to join the resistance with the hope of saving the village and everyone else on the planet, even if that was very naive of her. although she felt a slight sickness at staying in the village without her mother or father, and the sight of their empty bedroom at night and their empy chairs at the dining table was too unbearable. so she had left the village soon after ailine had left the starport.
lightning didn’t even know if her mother survived or if the clans shot the ship or if she even got the medical attention she needed. the HPG connecting hellenport to the first circuit was seized by the clans soon after, and all off-world communications were cut off for the remainder of the invasion.
