boots defected from the helenport royal military, after growing anger at the monarchy, and growing interest in other military members who had defected and the various small rebel groups scattered across the planet. ae joined as many groups together under aer as ae could, with the eventual goal of killing the monarchy and royal military, and replacing the governing body with one led by civilians. not necessarily boots, although several rebels did think ae would be a good choice. boots called for more civilians to join aer cause, as well as encouraging the royal military to defect, since the rebels were heavily outnumbered, and especially against the trained military pilots. boots and the rebels were able to launch some successful attacks against royal military units.
eventually, the royals called for peace with the rebels. boots agreed to meet the royals in person to discuss the matters over a meal – a lavish meal that the royal family had prepared, in spite of the suffering of their poor citizens. boots and the rebel commanders met prince anna helen, “the thunderbolt of helenport”, and their lance. however thunderbolt had planned to bribe a cook to poison the rebel leaders’ food, but the bribed cook was caught before the meal was even served and royalists and rebels began shooting at each other in the meeting hall. they began to run back to their mechs and a battle broke out, severely damaging the surrounding district. many civilians and almost every member of the rebel high command, including boots, were slaughtered in an event that is remembered as a battle by royalists, but a massacre by rebels.
